CCleaner bears the reputation of being one of the best Windows junk, temporary file cleaning tool. It helps you free up some space by automatically removing unwanted files generated by Windows programs and other third-party software. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet. While doing so, it however nags you system with one problem – it frequently displays System and Active monitoring alert popups.
UPDATE: The latest CCleaner v 5.47 Portable does away with these popups. Nevertheless you could take a look at these settings:
- Under Options > Settings, uncheck Inform me of updates to CCleaner.
- Under Options > Privacy, uncheck Help improve CCleaner by sending anonymous usage data.
Usually, CCleaner alert popup appear owing to the active monitoring system feature enabled, which runs silently in the background and displays the Alert messages when the junk files size exceeds 500 MB. This nagging issue can be resolved simply by increasing the default 500MB limit to 2GB or more. But there’s a catch here, the option of changing the limit is only available in CCleaner Professional and CCleaner Professional Plus edition.
Nonetheless, users having CCleaner Free installed and wanting to solve this pestering issue can do so via steps mentioned below in the guide.
Disable CCleaner Alert Popup
First, open the CCleaner window. Once you are there, click the Options icon residing in the left pane of the window and switch to Monitoring tab.
Then, from the right hand side of Monitoring tab, simply uncheck the following 2 options.
- Enable system monitoring
- Enable active monitoring.
The System Monitoring option will monitor your PC and detect whether it will benefit from a clean. Active Monitoring allows CCleaner Free to monitor your installation in the background, for any updates or new releases, so you don’t have to worry about keeping up-to-date.
Once you uncheck these options, a confirmation dialog box appears on your computer screen. Hit the Yes button.
That’s it! CCleaner will quit bothering you with the Alert popup.
Once you turn off active monitoring system, you will notice not only the CCleaner Alert popup stops appearing at regular intervals but even the CCleaner icon disappears from the system tray area. This should not pose any problem for a user since, one can always manually run CCleaner and scan the system to clean up junk files.

Avast is our favorite antivirus program for Windows, but it isn't perfect. It has a lot of great advanced settings, but it also comes with annoying sounds, popups, ads, and extra tools you probably don't want. Here are the ideal settings to get rid of its annoyances.
You should always have a good antivirus program running, even if you browse carefully—and Avast is a great option. It's biggest downside, however, is its constant nagging and loud notifications. Luckily, you can turn all of these off—you just need to know which settings to tick.

Why You Should Use Antivirus, Even If You Browse Carefully
The best way to avoid viruses is to use common sense, but that doesn't mean you should avoid…

Let's start at the beginning: When you first install Avast, we highly recommend choosing the 'Custom Installation' option, as we do with all programs. This ensures you only get the features and add-ons you want, and none of the stuff you don't.
By default, Avast's custom installation comes with a lot of things checked. Most of them shouldn't bug you too much, but we recommend unchecking anything you don't think you'll use. For me, that means unchecking the Software Updater, Remote Assistance, SecureLine, GrimeFighter, and Browser Cleanup features. I already have other software updaters, remote access, VPN, and cleanup tools installed that I prefer. I usually leave the browser protection enabled (though I don't use it much) and the rescue disk tool in case I need it.

Turn Off Avast's Sounds

When you get a virus, it's nice to have an audible notification to let you know—but I don't need the soothing voice of Lady Avast telling me every time my virus definitions have been updated (even if I can make the voice sound like a pirate).
To mute Avast's voice notifications (recommended): Head to Settings > General > Sounds and uncheck the 'Use Voiceover Sounds' box. All notification sounds will just have the familiar 'ding' instead of a spoken notification.

To mute certain notifications: Head to Settings > General > Sounds and uncheck the boxes for any notifications you'd like to mute. This will stop that particular notification from making any sound. Generally, I prefer to leave this on for completed scans and found viruses.
To mute all sounds: Head to Settings > General > Sounds and uncheck 'Enable Avast Sounds.'

Turn Off Update Notifications and Ad Popups
Advertisement
Avast's other main annoyance is its constant notifications. Once again, I appreciate notifications if I've gotten a virus, but I don't really need a popup every time it updates virus definitions, or every time it wants me to upgrade to Avast premium. Luckily, this is easily fixed with one checkbox.
To turn off ads and update notifications (recommended): Head to Settings > Update > Details and uncheck the 'Show Notification Box After Automatic Update' box. This one box disables both update notifications and ads. We wish there were two separate options (for those that wanted notifications about virus definition updates), but we'll take what we can get. After unchecking this one box, I've found that Avast behaves better than ever.

To turn off all notifications: Head to Settings > General and turning on Silent/Gaming Mode. I generally don't like this because I prefer to get notifications when I have a virus or potentially unwanted program detected.
To change the duration of notifications: Head to Settings > General > Popups. Each notification type has a number, in seconds, that it'll appear on your screen. You can tweak this to your liking (setting it to 0 gives it unlimited duration).

Other Features You May Want to Tweak
Those are the big ones, but while you're making a trip through the settings, there are a few other settings we recommend at least looking at:
- Avast! Community: In Settings > General, you may or may not want to uncheck 'Participate in the Avast! Community' if you prefer Avast not collect anonymous data.
- Software Updater Notifications: If you do use the Software Updater feature, but want to turn off the sounds, these are managed by a separate checkbox in Settings > Tools > Software Updater.
- Chrome as Default Browser: Avast, by default, uses Chrome as its default browser for any links clicked in its interface. To turn this off, just head to Settings > Troubleshooting > Do Not Use Chrome as Avast! Default Browser.

These are generally less annoying than the main sound and popup features, but they're worth looking at while you're digging around the settings.
This isn't an exhaustive list of every setting in Avast, just the ones we recommend tweaking as soon as you install it (based on the ones people complain about most). Avast has a lot of other features and settings that are pretty handy, so as with most programs, we recommend giving yourself a little tour of everything it has to offer when you first install it. Hopefully this guide at least makes it a little less annoying. Of course, if you prefer to try another program altogether, there are some great alternatives in our App Directory. Good luck!

Looking for computer help? Every week, our Tekspert answers one question about digital technology. Computers, tablets, phones, cameras…
When you’re browsing the internet, you’ve probably come across the annoying phenomenon known as “pop-ups,” those boxes or windows of text and images that literally pop up over the webpage you’re reading.
Pop-ups can be third-party advertising messages or messages from the website itself. And they behave in one of two ways:
- Often in the case of ads, you’ll see a notice telling you how many seconds the ad will show before it disappears to reveal your webpage, or before you can click on an X on the top right of the pop-up window to make the ad disappear.
- Site messages – for example, a newsletter signup invitation – usually will disappear when you click the X in the upper-hand corner of the popup window.
But sometimes you’ll land on a site where no sooner have you clicked a pop-up shut, than another one pops up.
How to Get Rid of Pop-Ups Altogether
Disable Ccleaner Popup
All the major Internet browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari, let you block all pop-ups. Here’s how:
In Internet Explorer
1. Click the icon in the upper right-hand corner, then select “internet options,” which will display this window:
2. Click the “privacy” tab, check “Turn on Pop-up Blocker,” then hit “Apply.” Click the X to close the box and you are all set.
In Mozilla Firefox
1. Select the tab marked tools in your browser toolbar and select “options”
2. In “options” select “content” and check “block pop-up windows,” hit OK and you are all done.
In Google Chrome
1. Click on the icon and select “Settings.” On the settings page, click on “Show advanced settings” at the very bottom of the page:
2. In the “Privacy Section” click the “Content settings” button
3. In the “Contents Setting Box,” scroll down to Pop Ups and select “Do not allow any site to show pop-ups (recommended)”
Hit OK and you are good to go.
In Safari (Apple’s browser)
Apple makes it easy to stop pop-ups:
1. Go to the icon in the upper right-hand corner.
2. Then check “Block pop-up windows.”
That does the trick.
After You Block Pop-Ups
Sometimes after you’ve blocked pop-ups, you’ll see a bar in the top right of your browser screen telling you that a pop-up is trying to open. Often, this is because you’ve landed on a webpage where the pop-up is an integral part of the site experience; for example, you might be on a shopping site, and the pop-up might be a detail view of the item you’re looking at.
When the pop-up bar appears, it will give you a choice of allowing the popup; allowing all popups on this site for this and future visits; or continuing to block popups on this site. Your choice – if you say “yes,” your browsing on other sites will still be pop-up free.
